Phantoms Of The Human Blues - Live Acoustic Version

I keep getting these strange invitations

By a phantom requesting my pursuit of him.

I was lost again. I was between jobs. Between lovers. Between career moves. Between albums. Between houses. Between knowing what my life was about.

In moments like this I have found myself asking questions about my past. Mainly about how I got here. If I had my hands on the wheel, how did I end up here – lost?

Being between things at that time had me feeling burned out, jaded and questioning everything.

There seemed to be two distinct parts to my personality. One that set out missions and challenges to pursue and another part that took the action and followed the instructions. The former was like a phantom foreman.

These wild goose chases included trying to understand love, freedom, self-transcendence, abstinence, adventure, experiencing all the world has to offer, success, creative mastery, building a business, teaching others, etc.

I couldn’t get away from this feeling that there was a part of me setting out these obstacle courses and then sitting back, laughing, as I bumbled about chasing phantoms.

The realisation that many people are chasing these phantoms throughout their lives made me wonder about how this can lead to us being sad, bummed out, listless, hen-pecked and helpless. I wrapped up all of those emotions into the catch-all phrase of ‘human blues’.

The upside is that we get the opportunity to consciously recreate our environment. This tends to include a conscious process of asking, “Do I need this?”, “Why am I storing that person’s stuff here? I’m going to get rid of it!”.

It makes us wonder why we hung on to all that stuff, why we didn’t see it as a problem earlier, why we had to wait for the flickering flame to turn into a full-blown bonfire before we would take notice.

So, the junkyard seemed like the right place to perform this song with all this discarded material that people decided they didn't need anymore.

PHANTOMS OF THE HUMAN BLUES

A rock came smashing through my window with a

letter attached by a piece of string.

I keep getting these strange invitations by a

phantom requesting my pursuit of him.

Once I have his scent, I begin to think

that this was my idea from the very beginning.

Signed by the phantoms of love, freedom, grace,

Abstinence and then my very own name.

As I skulk through the alley, I sense them in the sewer beneath.

As I dive deep down to the coral their shadows move among the reef, evading me.

I write ‘return to sender’ and now the postmaster is bent and confused.

He’ll have a challenge getting back and beyond the reaches of the known universe.

Out there beyond where thought comes from, he’ll see the phantom’s emotional hues.

None is more devastating to the eye than all of these human blues.

As I trawl through the valley, I hear their voices coming from the mount.

As I summit the peak, I see them sailing across the oceans skin, without me.

I again write ‘return to sender’ and now the postmaster is bent and confused.

He’ll have a challenge getting back and beyond the reaches of the known universe.

Out there beyond where love comes from, he’ll see the phantoms’ emotional hues.

None is more devastating to the eye than all of these human blues.

All of these human blues.

All of these human blues.

All of these human blues.

All of these human blues.
