My friend Adrian was in intensive care, clearly navigating the final mile of life. We all knew his passing was imminent. After days of being with him, in and out of the ICU, we needed some air and maybe some swill to settle our fraying edges.
As we exited the Austin Hospital in Melbourne the rush of cold air outside hit my body and replaced the scent of the sterile air inside, with the clean air of out doors.
In that moment I felt Adrian falling. I heard him calling. It’s like he waited for us to leave, so that he could slip away without us having to witness it.
We returned to find out that he would not. The look on the nurses face gave it all away within a millisecond. The world caved, the hurt set in and the breaking of the grieving to come launched upon us all.
One of the only things to think about next was how to carry his memory forward.

I HEARD YOU CALLING
When the nurse came, I read her face
Like a book which burst into flame and fell like ash in the dirt
Then I felt the whole world hurt
When I saw you swimming freely
Above your bed, into the air then into the night
My love turned you into light
I swear I felt you falling
Yeah I swear I felt you falling
Yeah I swear I felt you fall into deep sleep
Inseparable magnetic forces
No matter how far apart the two of us are
I will always be pulled toward your star
I swear I heard you calling
Yeah, I swear I heard you calling
Yeah, I swear I heard you calling my name
The air that I breathe
Everything I see
Every memory – lives on in me
Yeah, and I swear I heard you calling
Yeah, I swear I heard you calling
Yeah, I swear I heard you calling my name
