Calling - Live Acoustic Version

As I sat with my friend who was passing away, I expected to be utterly devastated. In other moments I was, but in this moment I eased into a deep sense of gratitude for who he was, the golden moments we created together and all that he taught me.

My friend had been in a dire predicament in the ICU for a about two weeks by this point. In a way we were expecting things to take a turn. We just didn't know when.

As with long hospital visits, we had to take a break, get some fresh air and go for a walk.

Driving down to the nearby strip of shops, I had a feeling, a sense, an emptiness.

I swear I heard him calling. Not in a painful way. Just letting us know that he was taking this moment to make his exit so that we didn't have to be there for that unfathomable moment.

I've heard it is a common occurrence with people passing on, for them to wait until everyone has left the room, so they can leave this life.

This first line of this song picks up from where this story leaves off.

As we walked into the ward, the look on the nurses face revealed everything, and the hurting began.

I wanted to honour my friend with this song.

He's gone, but he lives on through my music and all the fond memories I have of him.

This song is for Adrian, Jason his brother and Jan his mother.

CALLING

When the nurse came, I read her face

Like a book which burst into flame and fell like ash in the dirt

Then I felt the whole world hurt

When I saw you swimming freely

Above your bed, into the air then into the night

My love turned you into light

I swear I felt you falling

Yeah I swear I felt you falling

Yeah I swear I felt you fall into deep sleep

Inseparable magnetic forces

No matter how far apart the two of us are

I will always be pulled toward your star

I swear I heard you calling

Yeah, I swear I heard you calling

Yeah, I swear I heard you calling my name

The air that I breathe

Everything I see

Every memory – lives on in me

Yeah, and I swear I heard you calling

Yeah, I swear I heard you calling

Yeah, I swear I heard you calling my name
